New Regent’s Wine Pub
After years of success at Twenty Seven Steps serving Otautahi some of the finest bistro cuisine around, Emma & Paul made the jump to take over the lease for the ground floor space and opened Downstairs in 2022.
Emma’s love for wine really shines through here, and although you can get some outstanding wines at Twenty Seven Steps, Downstairs presents the opportunity to really shine a spotlight on the best drops our region (and further!) has to offer.
Paul’s worked his magic and curated a menu that offers pub style kai with that charm and comfort that only Paul Howells can cast on any meal.
The Wine
With over 200 wines on offer, Downstairs is a wine-lovers heaven. Over many years of working in hospitality, Emma has built many connections with local, regional and national wine makers.
By getting to know the people behind the wine makes it so much more of an honour to have their products on our shelves.
On any given day there are about 40 different glass pours on offer and the Downstairs philosophy on what they serve is quite simple - “it’s always wines we like made or sold by people we like”.

Opened in 1932, New Regent Street is Christchurch’s most distinctive heritage precinct, known for its pastel Spanish Mission façades. At number 16, the shopfront has hosted a variety of businesses that reflect the city’s changing character. In the 1940s it became home to the Co-operative Bookshop, before transforming into the Coffee Pot Café, a lively post-war meeting spot. Over the decades, architects reshaped the interior while the street’s historic exterior remained intact. We are proud to be today’s tenants of 16 New Regent St, and humble caretakers of this moment in its history. We strive to embody both the resilience and reinvention of Christchurch, celebrating hearty, seasonal cuisine and warm hospitality in one of the city’s most treasured streetscapes.
